Life has settled down on the server at the moment, with four players kindly building and creating new areas and devices. Being a novice administrator of a server, I’m not too sure what I should do to engage the players within the world so I thought I would just try a few things

  • Weekly newsletter – After sending out permissions to add the users to the subscription list I have started work on a weekly newsletter about the server. This will be used mainly to inform players what is going on and if there are any problems or new content to explore. It also lets me add various images since I am becoming a little too screen shot happy at the moment. Creating and distributing the newsletter has also allowed me to try out Mail Chimp which has been a internet mailing list provider that I have been signed up to for some time. I send out the newsletter on a Friday – which might seem a strange day – but I figure that most people will be playing over the weekend so it seems logical, rather than sending on a Monday. If you would like to be added as a subscriber then just send me your name and email and I’ll add you to the list.

  • Level that skill -My interest in gamification has also drifted across to my Minecraft server. I have recently installed a plugin called mcMMO. This allows players to level up in various skills and gain new abilities just like playing an online role playing game. I’m not sure how successful this will be but and at the moment I am yet to learn all the commands, but hopefully this will add a certain about of ‘experience’ and competition to the game.

  • Grief Prevention – This was not something I was aware of until someone told me of the act of griefing the spawn area – yes apparently it is a verb! I’ve added the plugin called Grief Prevention which allows players to ‘protect’ their homes by placing a chest. Additional ‘blocks’ can be protected by playing on line for a certain period of time and then using a golden spade to expand the area or add a new area. I’m wondering how easy it is to find gold now – on a different server which I actually play on, I was lucky enough to find some in a mine. Hopefully its quite easy to implement.

  • If you are interested in joining the whitelisted server then you can get in touch with me and let me know your profile name and I’ll send you the server details. In the meantime you can have a look round the server by watching the Minecraft Montage video by clicking the button below. More up dates next week – until then, keep building!

Thanks so much for collating all of this minecraft stuff – it’s very interesting to read/watch it all! I’m exploring options for my school – and will connect on twitter!
